NICU MRI Case Study

Example from Cincinnati Children’s: Failed Diaphragm Repair Corrected

  • Prenatal surgery was performed to correct a hernia in the diaphragm of a boy.

  • After birth the baby failed to thrive.  Despite clear lungs, oxygen levels remained too low.  X-ray and Ultrasound were normal.

  • MR revealed that the diaphragm was tethered, causing a substantial amount of air to be pushed between the lungs.

  • Life saving surgery to repair the diaphragm was successful.
